Shift Chemist – Leading Hand

  • Multinational Minerals Company - SE Suburbs
  • Six Month Contract with View to Permanency
  • Be Part of an Actively Expanding Company
Our client is Australia's largest diversified processor and supplier of minerals for the Australian, New Zealand and Asian manufacturing and primary industries.

Due to company growth, our client’s QC Laboratory has added an afternoon shift to deal with the large number of geological samples requiring analysis.  As a consequence, we require a shift chemist to conduct quality control on minerals and to oversee two laboratory technicians working afternoon shift.  The hours of work are 3:30pm to 11:30pm, Monday to Friday.

This is a very hands-on role with an emphasis on bench work and team direction, rather than administrative duties.  It would suit someone who is willing to get their hands dirty and conduct repetitive work when necessary.  The position is a six month contract with view to permanency.

The associated duties include:

  • Overseeing a small group of Laboratory Technicians.
  • Preparation and milling of mineral samples
  • Conducting chemical, physical and instrumental testing including titrations, XRF, loss on ignition, chemical oxygen demand, surface area etc.
  • Ensuring that all testing is completed and reported on time.
  • Reporting regularly to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Responsibility for the safety and security of afternoon shift staff.

The successful candidate will work in well maintained and comfortable facilities with on-site parking.  Benefits include a very good hourly rate, 9% super, 15% shift loading and paid meals breaks.  Full training will be provided.

This is a responsible, hands-on role and would suit someone that prefers afternoon hours and enjoys working on the bench.

To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:

  • A Degree or Diploma in chemistry or related field.
  • Previous laboratory experience essential preferably leading a small team.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to solve problems as needed.
  • Mature individual able to work under pressure.
  • An understanding of quality systems would be advantageous.
