Analytical Research Chemist / Biochemist - Environmental Toxins

  • Minimum One Year Contract with Possible Extension in Melbourne
  • Research into Exhaled Metabolites / Biomarkers from Occupational Exposure
  • Monitor Human Exposure to Environmental Toxins
Our client, a Government Agency, requires a Research Scientist to be an integral part of an investigation attempting to link metabolites in human biological samples to exposure to various chemical / environmental toxins. It is envisaged that these metabolites will be detected via GC-MS and LC-MS in conjunction with specialised sampling techniques.  
 
The aim of this project is to provide a scientifically based correlation between occupational exposure and resulting biomarkers for OH&S monitoring. 
 
The successful candidate will  be based in Melbourne and will be required to travel interstate to collect samples from participating subjects.
 
To be considered for this exciting role, you must meet  the following criteria:
 
  • An Honours degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related fields.
  • Experience in the sampling and analytical testing of human biological samples, especially exhaled breath, will be highly regarded.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in the use of GC-MS and/or LC-MS or HPLC.  Use of instruments to identify chemicals and/or biomolecules highly regarded.
  • The ability to produce high quality research requiring a high level of originality and innovation.
  • Willingness to accept personal responsibility for defining and solving scientific problems.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively autonomously or as part of a team.
  • A working knowledge of OH&S issues will be advantageous.
  • Must be an Australian citizen and be willing to undergo a security check.
 
This is a rare opportunity to become involved with ""cutting edge"" technology and research.  Initially, the position is for twelve months with a view to possible extension depending upon the success of the projects which may lead to the availability of additional funding.
