Our client, a well known government agency based in Tasmania, is currently looking for an Analytical Chemist to work in their micro nutrients section. 
 
With tertiary qualifications in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Food Science & Technology, up to the level of PhD, you will need to optimise and validate existing analytical test methods using instruments such as HPLC, Karl Fisher, and Carbon-Nitrogen Analyser, as well as general wet chemical tests including gravimetric analysis.  The intent is that the methods will be NATA registered and the laboratory accredited.
 
In summary your duties will involve the provision of technical and professional support in the following areas:
 
  • Chemical and physical analysis of foods
  • Sensory testing and shelf-life evaluation of foods
  • Calibration and maintenance of scientific equipment.
  • Conducting reviews of the scientific literature to inform method development activities. 
  • Applying knowledge of relevant theory and analytical techniques to undertake method development and validation activities in a NATA environment.
  • Preparing documented SOPs (methods of analysis) for the determination of a range of analytes in foods.
 
This is an ongoing full-time contract position, until July 2012, at which time it will be reviewed for extension. 
 
To be considered for this position you must meet the following criteria:
 
  • You MUST BE an Australian citizen!
  • Have tertiary qualifications such as a PhD or lower - degree minimum in Chemistry, Biochemisty of Food Science & Technology.
  • Excellent analytical chemistry skills especially in gravimetric analysis.
  • Good working knowledge and method development of HPLC.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a team member or individually under general direction.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on time.
  • Competence in the use of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, for the purposes of documenting SOPs, recording data and updating laboratory records.
  • Ability to operate computer controlled laboratory equipment.
