Interviewing Techniques And Resume Preparation

JobSeekers Workshops

Starting a career, seeking employment or looking for a career change can be a daunting task. Whilst everyone wants to make a good impression with their application, which will ultimately lead to employment, many people struggle because they are not aware of how to proceed.

It is often assumed by many jobseekers that the obvious thing to do when commencing a job search is to saturate the marketplace with their resume. It is however, more appropriate to be selective when providing your resume to prospective employers.

Being selective provides you with the opportunity of carefully reading an advertisement and ensuring that you are indeed a good match to the advertised position. Establishing a match can be time consuming, however it is a worthwhile exercise.

To achieve a good candidate match, you must have approximately an 80% match to the job criteria and requirements highlighted within the advertisement. Your accompanying Letter of Application must address each of the selection criteria and portray to the person reading your application that you are someone that meets their selection requirements.

A premature submission of an application may eliminate you from the interview process, especially if it may provide information that directly conflicts with the organisation's selection criteria. Your resume may contain information such as your age, qualifications, education, experience, achievements, etc. that may be deemed negatives during the screening process. If this is the case, then you are providing information that may be excluding you from the recruitment process.

A common question often raised is should a Letter of Application be detailed or brief. Prospective candidates need to be aware that they will not be the only person applying for the advertised position. Often a mistake is made by forwarding a resume with a two or three line covering letter stating that they are submitting a resume for the job advertised in last Saturday's newspaper when often competition is fierce. As the Letter of Application is often the first point of contact between the applicant and the recipient, the best way to obtain the attention of the recipient is to encourage them to read your tailored resume in detail rather than just glance at it. That is the purpose of a tailored Letter of Application. It highlights your suitability for the role, which in turn encourages the client to read the attached resume. The resume reinforces the Letter of Application and this increases the chances of being invited to an interview.

By following a simple yet structured format, introduced in ChemSkill's JobSeekers Workshops, when forwarding an application for positions available, you will have improved your chances of being selected for the interview process. If you have prepared a well-written letter and resume you will still obtain the readers full attention even if you are in the middle or at the end of a big folder of applications.
